3 Reasons Why Kenya Is a Must-Visit Safari Destination For Nigerian Families
Looking for adventure? Kenya is the real deal. It’s family-friendly and packed with experiences you won’t forget.
If you’re a Nigerian family looking to ease into the travel lifestyle, Kenya might just be the perfect starting point. It’s close enough to feel familiar, yet far enough to give you that spark of adventure. From relaxed visa access to unforgettable wildlife and a rustic beach escape, here are three solid reasons why Kenya should be on your family holiday radar.
Here are three reasons why Kenya is one of the best entry-level international destinations for Nigerian families.
1. Visa-Free Entry (Well, Almost)
It’s no secret that Nigerian passports don’t open a lot of visa-free doors. Until recently, Kenya wasn’t one of them either. But as of January 1, 2024, Kenya removed visa requirements for most foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
Instead of a traditional visa, travellers now apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). It’s not quite a visa—but it’s a permit that lets you enter for up to 90 days, and it’s a whole lot easier to get.
You can apply for your Kenya eTA at least 3 days in advance of your trip (or as early as 3 months prior) by visiting www.etakenya.go.ke. The cost is officially $35, but you may be required to pay an additional service fee of around $49.
What You’ll Need:
- Valid passport
- Two passport photographs
- Hotel and flight information
- Yellow card (yes, many first-timers don’t know what this is—see this yellow card guide)
- Debit/credit card for payment

2. Nairobi: Where Wildlife Meets the City

Many people are surprised to learn that Nairobi National Park—a full wildlife safari—is just 7 km from the city centre.
You don’t have to spend thousands or travel deep into the wilderness to see lions, giraffes, zebras, or rhinos. This park offers a taste of the wild without the logistical headache. Entry tickets cost around $42 for adults and $22 for children. (Tour and transport fees are separate—our travel club can assist with a complete package for members.)
Whether you’re birdwatching, catching hippos in their pools, or spotting a cheetah at dawn, Nairobi National Park delivers an authentic safari experience that’s perfect for families and first-time safari-goers.

3. Mombasa: Safari + Beach Vibes on a Budget
Want a beach holiday and a touch of safari? Then Mombasa might just be your sweet spot.
Families in our travel club often combine Nairobi and Mombasa for a double holiday: a few days of wildlife, then a few days of white-sand beaches, snorkeling, dolphin watching, or even surfing.
Mombasa offers a Maldives-on-a-budget experience but rustic, charming, and proudly African. Think coral architecture, coastal spice markets, and sunsets on the water.
And whoever said Nigerians don’t like water sports? Think again!
